Best Stainless Steel Jewellery Brands 2026:
The Honest Comparison

Same gold colour, same price bracket, three completely different metals underneath. Here is what each brand is actually made of.

Start Here

Two Gold Necklaces, One Price, Very Different Endings

Put two gold-toned necklaces side by side at £35 and they look identical. Eighteen months later, one still looks new and the other has a dull olive tinge at the clasp. The difference was never the design. It was the metal underneath.

Almost every affordable gold-toned brand builds on one of three foundations: 316L stainless steel with a vacuum-deposited coating, plated brass, or gold flash over a base metal. "18k gold plated" is printed on all three and is technically defensible in each case, yet it means very different things for how long a piece survives a shower, a gym session or a summer.

This guide sticks to what each brand publishes about itself, plus the public review platforms. Where a figure is not published, we say so. We also sell jewellery, so Moonela is in the table with the same columns applied to us.

316L Stainless Steel With PVD Coating

Surgical-grade 316L is the steel used in medical implants and dive watches. It does not rust or tarnish and releases almost no nickel, which is why it suits sensitive skin. It is silver-coloured on its own, so the gold comes from a coating, and the better method is PVD: the colour layer is vaporised onto the surface in a vacuum chamber and bonds at the atomic level rather than being dipped in a chemical bath. Our explainer on PVD coating on jewellery covers the process.

The consequence that matters: with steel underneath, the worst case is undramatic. If the coating wears at a friction point, what shows through is steel, and nothing turns your skin green.

Plated Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc: warm-toned, easy to cast in detail, and cheaper to work than steel, which is why much of European fashion jewellery is built on it. The gold layer is electroplated and measured in microns, and 3 microns is genuinely thick by that standard.

The catch is what happens once that layer is breached. Copper reacts with moisture, sweat, perfume and chlorine, producing both the darkening at the clasp and the green mark on skin, as our guide on why jewellery turns your skin green keeps finding. That does not make plated brass bad: kept dry and worn on occasion, a 3-micron piece can look beautiful for years. It is a different product with different rules, and the rules live in the care instructions.

Gold Flash, or "Doré à l'Or Fin"

The French phrase doré à l'or fin means "gilded with fine gold" and sounds like the most premium option here. In practice it is the thinnest of the three: a fine layer of high-karat gold, often 24k, over a base metal, and a thin layer of a soft metal is the least hard-wearing combination in plated jewellery. Its advantage is colour. For occasion pieces that is exactly the right trade; for an everyday chain in the shower, it asks the most care of you.

The One-Line Version Steel plus PVD survives water and friction best. Plated brass looks the warmest for the money but reacts once the layer is breached. Gold flash gives the truest colour and the shortest hard-wearing life. All three are sold as "18k gold plated".
The Comparison

What Each Brand Is Actually Made Of

Every entry comes from what the brand publishes about its own materials, pricing and care guidance. Where no figure is published, the cell says so rather than carrying an estimate.

Read the material column before the price column. Two brands can sit at €35 and sell fundamentally different objects, and the base metal predicts how a piece looks in two years. Brands that claim waterproof explicitly have usually engineered for it.

The Steel Camp

The Brands Building on 316L Steel

These brands share our material choice, which makes them the most useful comparison and the hardest to be lazy about.

Zag Bijoux

Founded in Paris in 2009, Zag Bijoux is the reference point for steel jewellery in France and the brand most people are really comparing against. The material is 316L stainless steel with PVD coating, the same construction we use, and the brand states waterproof performance explicitly rather than hinting at it.

Prices run from €15 to €59, aggressive for that material, and Trustpilot shows 4.4 out of 5 across roughly 18,490 reviews. The volume is worth pausing on: you only reach that number over many years of shipping, and holding 4.4 across it is a real result. If you want a well-made steel piece at a low price from an established French brand, Zag Bijoux is a straightforward recommendation. The gap, from where we sit, is personalisation.

Comptoir Paris

Comptoir Paris is the other name that surfaces constantly for a steel name necklace in France, at €29.90. That price sets the expectation for the category, and any brand above it needs a reason. Ours is the construction, since a cut-out script pendant in 18k gold PVD over 316L is a different manufacturing job from a stamped or engraved one. At €29.90 there is still a fair argument for trying the style cheaply first.

What Steel Actually Buys You Not indestructibility. Any coating can wear at high-friction points. What steel buys is a benign failure mode: what appears underneath is stainless steel, not a copper alloy that reacts with your skin.
The Plated Camp

The Brands Building on Brass and Gold Flash

This is where the "18k gold plated" label does the most work, and where the care instructions tell you more than the product description. None of these brands are hiding anything: the information is published, just where nobody scrolls.

Waekura

Launched in 2016, Waekura is one of the genuinely well-liked brands here, holding 4.4 out of 5 across 3,237 reviews on Avis Vérifiés. There is no honest way to write about it as a cautionary tale. What is worth knowing is the material: plated brass rather than stainless steel, at 1 to 3 microns, backed by a one-year warranty. Three microns is substantial by fashion jewellery standards, and a published warranty is more commitment than most of the market offers.

The difference is the base metal, not the quality of the work. Brass means copper, and copper prefers to stay away from prolonged water, chlorine and heavy sweat. If you take your jewellery off for the shower and the pool, that is a sensible thing to own. If you want to forget it is there, steel is the category built for it, and the lens to use on waterproof necklaces.

Luj Paris

Luj Paris sits at the premium end of the plated category, from €50 to €450, on brass with a 3-micron gold layer. What makes it genuinely useful in a comparison like this is its honesty: the brand itself advises against wearing its pieces in water and during sport.

That deserves credit rather than criticism. Telling you the limits before you buy lets you match the piece to the occasion, and it draws the line clearly: Luj Paris is jewellery you put on, not jewellery you live in. Both are legitimate, but they are not interchangeable, and price alone does not tell you which you are holding.

Nilaï

Nilaï works in doré à l'or fin, a fine layer of 24k gold over a base metal: the least hard-wearing approach and also the one that gives the warmest colour, which is the whole reason brands choose it. On Trustpilot it carries a 3.6, mid-pack in a category where scores cluster between 3 and 4.5. Read that alongside the material, because a gold flash finish asks more in care and storage than a PVD coating does.

Lou.Yetu

Founded in Paris in 2015, Lou.Yetu is well known in the French market and carries a Trustpilot score of 2.4, with roughly 48% of reviews at one star. Tarnishing is a documented theme in that feedback.

We will leave it there, without piling on. A low score across a large public review base is information a buyer is entitled to have, and also a snapshot rather than a verdict. Read a spread of recent reviews and decide for yourself.

The Snake Smooth Necklace

The test case for any material claim: a flat chain that sits against the skin all day, every day. Ours is 18k gold PVD over 316L, which means showers, gym sessions and sea swims are not events you have to plan around.

Reading the Scores

How to Read a Trustpilot Score Without Being Fooled

Star ratings are the fastest way to compare brands and the easiest to misread. Two things change what a number means, and neither is visible on the score itself.

Brand Platform Score Volume
Zag Bijoux Trustpilot 4.4 ~18,490 reviews
Waekura Avis Vérifiés 4.4 3,237 reviews
Nilaï Trustpilot 3.6 Not published here
Lou.Yetu Trustpilot 2.4 ~48% one-star

Volume and Platform Change the Meaning

A 4.4 across 18,490 reviews and a 4.4 across 3,237 reviews are both good, but they are not the same statement: the larger base absorbed years of peak-season delays and courier failures and still landed there. Platform matters too. Trustpilot is open to anyone, so it captures people angry about a courier alongside people unhappy with a product, while Avis Vérifiés collects only from confirmed purchasers. The two are not quite like for like.

The Shape Beats the Average

The most useful number on any review page is the percentage at one star. A 3.6 built from a spread of threes and fours describes a brand that is broadly fine and occasionally frustrating. A low average driven by a large one-star block describes a specific, repeating failure. At around 48% one-star, the pattern in those reviews matters more than the average.

Read the one-star percentage and the complaint that repeats. The average tells you far less than the shape.

Our Own Entry

Where Moonela Fits, Including What We Are Not

Same columns, applied to us. Moonela pieces are 18k gold PVD over 316L stainless steel, waterproof and hypoallergenic, from £24 to £60, with cut-out script name necklaces in the range.

What We Are Not

We are not solid gold and never describe ourselves as such. The gold is a PVD coating over stainless steel: a finish with a lifespan rather than a metal all the way through, and on rings and bracelet links a coating will eventually show wear that solid metal would not. Anyone telling you a £30 piece is solid 18k gold is telling you something arithmetically impossible.

We also do not publish a micron figure, and we would rather explain why than invent one. Microns are the right measure for electroplating, where a soft layer is all that stands between you and the base metal. PVD bonds at the atomic level, so hardness and adhesion drive its lifespan more than thickness, and a micron number here would sound rigorous while meaning very little.

What We Do That the Others Do Not

Across the brands here, personalisation is either absent or limited to engraving on a finished piece. The cut-out script pendant, shaped from your name, in waterproof steel with a PVD finish, is the gap we built into: not because our chain is better, but because the pendant is a thing the others do not make.

The same construction runs through waterproof bracelets and tarnish-free earrings. Mixing a steel chain with plated brass earrings means one half of the stack ages faster, and the mismatch shows in photographs long before you notice it in the mirror.

Choose Zag Bijoux if

You want established French steel at the lowest price and personalisation is not what you are shopping for.

Choose Waekura if

Choose Luj Paris if

You are buying an occasion piece at a higher price and are happy with the brand's no-water guidance.

Choose Moonela if

You want a personalised script name piece that survives the shower, the sea and the gym.

Wrists are where plated jewellery is tested hardest: desks, sleeves, bag straps, handwashing. Built on 316L with a PVD finish, this one is designed to be worn through all of it rather than protected from it.

Five Questions That Settle Any Brand Comparison

Apply these to any brand in this article, or to any brand that launches next month. Four minutes on a product page.

1. Base metal, in one word

Steel, brass or silver. If the page says "18k gold plated" and stops, check the materials tab or the care page. Brands proud of their base metal lead with it.

2. Waterproof, in writing

Not "water resistant", but a plain statement that the piece can be worn in water. Silence is itself an answer, and a brand that says to avoid water has given you the page's most useful sentence.

3. What the care page asks

The most honest page on any jewellery site, written by the people who handle returns. "Remove before showering" and "wear and forget" are two different commitments.

4. Warranty term

A published term is a brand putting a number on its own confidence. Waekura's one year on plated brass is real in a category where many publish nothing at all.

5. Does it cover your stack?

Buy across brands with different base metals and your pieces age at different rates. Within two years a steel chain next to a brass earring shows it.

The honest caveat

No coated piece is indestructible, ours included. The question is not "will it last forever" but "what happens when the finish wears".

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best stainless steel jewellery brand in 2026?

There is no single answer, because the brands are optimised for different things. Zag Bijoux is the strongest option for low-priced 316L steel with PVD, at 4.4 on Trustpilot across roughly 18,490 reviews. Moonela is the one for a personalised script name piece in the same construction, and Comptoir Paris is worth knowing if price decides it, at €29.90.

What is the difference between stainless steel and plated brass jewellery?

316L stainless steel contains no copper and does not react with moisture or sweat, so even if a coating wears, the metal underneath stays inert. Brass is a copper and zinc alloy, so once the plating is breached the copper reacts with water, sweat and chlorine, causing darkening and green marks. Both sell at similar prices under the same "18k gold plated" label.

Is "doré à l'or fin" better than gold plating?

It uses purer gold but is the least hard-wearing of the common finishes. Doré à l'or fin means a thin layer of fine gold, often 24k, over a base metal, and high-karat gold is soft, so it wears faster than a thicker plating or a PVD coating. It gives the warmest colour, which suits occasion pieces more than everyday wear.

Which French jewellery brands are genuinely waterproof?

Look for two things together: a 316L stainless steel base and an explicit written waterproof claim. Zag Bijoux states waterproof performance and uses 316L with PVD; Moonela uses 18k gold PVD over 316L. Brands built on plated brass generally do not make the claim, and Luj Paris advises against water and sport, which is useful clarity rather than a shortcoming.

How many microns of plating should I look for?

For electroplated brass, thicker is better, and 3 microns is substantial by fashion jewellery standards. Waekura publishes 1 to 3 microns and Luj Paris 3 microns, which is more transparency than most of the market offers. The measure does not transfer cleanly to PVD, whose lifespan depends more on hardness and adhesion than thickness.

Can I get a personalised name necklace in waterproof steel?

Yes, though the options are narrow. Most steel brands sell finished pieces, and where personalisation exists it is usually engraving on a ready-made pendant. Comptoir Paris offers a steel name necklace at €29.90, and Moonela makes cut-out script pendants shaped from your name in 18k gold PVD over 316L, in the name necklace collection.

Is PVD gold the same as solid gold?

No, and no brand at these prices is selling solid gold. PVD is a coating bonded onto a base metal in a vacuum chamber: much harder and longer-lasting than electroplating, and waterproof, but a finish with a lifespan rather than a metal all the way through. Moonela pieces are 18k gold PVD over 316L, and we describe them that way deliberately.

One Construction, Whole Stack

Steel Underneath, Gold On Top

Every Moonela piece is 18k gold PVD over 316L stainless steel. Waterproof, hypoallergenic, and made to be worn rather than protected. Including the one with your name on it.
